This scholarship fund was established by the Houston GLBT Community Center in honor of John Lawrence and the late Tyrone Garner,
the two petitioners in the landmark Lawrence v. Texas case, which overturned anti-gay sodomy laws in the United States.
The scholarship recognizes outstanding leadership shown by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered high school seniors and
current undergraduates by contributing to the cost of their continuing education. Selection is based upon character and need,
not academic performance alone. Email questions to the Treasurer .

MISSION

The Center's mission is to empower, educate, and nurture individuals of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, generating a sense of community by providing for their social, emotional, and physical well being. Since 1996, the Community Center has been serving the greater Houston gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community by providing programs and activities in five broad areas:

1. Arts and culture.
2. Collaborations with other organizations.
3. Education and public policy.
4. Information resources.
5. Support groups/Leadership development.

As part of its mission, the Center offices low-cost and free meeting and office space to eligible non-profits.

Numerous Houston organizations have previously had office space at the Center, including H.A.T.C.H.; Houston chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG); Pride Committee of Houston; Q-Patrol; Greater Houston GLBT Chamber of Commerce; Houston GLBT Political Caucus; the Black Lesbian and Gay Coalition; the Texas Human Rights Foundation; Southern Poverty Law Center; and the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Art - a group focusing on African-American GLBT artists, currently office at the Center
along with A Community United - a group focusing on providing housing to HIV positive individuals.

HISTORY

The Center was founded as the Houston Lesbian and Gay Community Center in 1996 by a dedicated group of activists including Walt Duffey, Brian J. Tognotti, Shawn Webb, Dewayne Ross, Russ Jenkins, and Burton Bagby-Grose (according to official public documents filed with the county clerk of Harris County, Texas and the Texas Secretary of State). Many others played important roles in the development of the Center, including the late Center President Dr. Maria Minicucci. The Center moved into its first facility at 803 Hawthorne Avenue in March 1998 during the administration of Brian J. Tognotti, the first president of the Center, and moved into its current location at 3400 Montrose Boulevard in early 2003 during the first presidency of Timothy Brookover. During the presidency of Burton Bagby-Grose in 2003, the name and mission statement were changed to include bisexual and transgender people. The Center awarded the first John Lawrence and Tyrone Garner Scholarship of the Houston GLBT Community Center in June, 2010 during the Center's annual Lawrence v. Texas Commemoration.
